World War One Technology
Trench Warfare
*New metallurgical and chemical industries had created new firepower that made defensive almost invisible and attacking almost impossible.
* These included the Bolt action-infantry rifles, rifled artillery and hydraulic recoil mechanisms
*Zig-Zag trenches and machine guns made it almost impossible to pass on defended grounds
*The hand grenade already existed but was also used to attack trenches
*Introduction of the high explosive shells
*Development of the concrete pill box
Artillery
*The first box barrage was used
*The wire-cutting No. 106 fuze was developed
*The first anti-aircraft guns were designed
*Indirect counter battery fire was invented
*The creeping barrage was perfected
Poison Gas
*The germans used gas first in the battlefield in april 1915 at the battle of the Ypres in Belgium
*First used Chlorine
*Later on Mustard gas and phosgene and other gases were introduced as well
*At first on defence was a piece of clothe with water or urine on it, gas masks were later developed
*Possibly caused over 1,000,000 casualties
Tanks
*The first tanks were introduced
*Someone driving and then someone sitting up with their gun shooting as best as they could
*Early tanks though would break down and were unreliable
