The King-Byng Crisis
*P.M. William Lyon MacKenzie King - elected in 1922
*Thought Canada should be a lot more independent from Great Britain
*First act to implement this was to not back up Britain when they were invading Turkey in 1922 ( Chanak Affair )
*1922 Halibut treaty with the U.S - defined areas where only Canada can fish
*1925 Election = Liberals get 101 seats
- Conservatives get 116 seats
- Progressive 24
*Conservatives should have won a minority government, Liberals asked Progressive party to form a coalition with them
*Liberals lose the support of the Progressive party because of a liquor smuggling scandal.
*P.M. MacKenzie King asks G.G Byng to have another election
*Byng doesn't want to but is later forced
*King wins in a landslide
*Ever since then the G.G has never acted against the wishes of a P.M
*He infurally ended the power of the G.G

The King-Byng crisis helped Canadians become more independent from Britain by giving their vote to P.M.Mackenzie King, thus reducing the power that the Governor General has over our government. To this day we are still much more independent from our Governor General thanks to P.M.Mackenzie King.
