Canada in Europe: The Dieppe Raid
By 1942 1 million Russians had died and they needed help
Canada went to invade Dieppe Port , France
Possible objectives included seizing and holding a major port for a short period
Wanted to prove it was possible and to gather intelligence from prisoners and captured materials while assessing the German responses.
Allies also wanted to destroy coastal defences, port structures and all strategic buildings.
Raid could have given a morale boost to the troops, resistance and general public
None of the objectives were accomplished
Troops had the completely wrong equipment.
brought in tanks who’s tread didn’t catch on the gravel and pebbled beach;every time they tried to move if would just dig them deeper into the ground.
German forces knew of this attack so they easily overcame the Canadian forces.
battle only lasted 9 hours
907 Canadians killed, 586 wounded and 1874 were taken to Prisoner of War Camps.

Summary
Canada went into this battle poorly equipped and with completely unclear objectives. No major objectives of the raid were accomplished. A total of 3,623 of the 6,086 men (almost 60%) who made it ashore were either killed, wounded, or captured. The air force failed to lure the Luftwaffe into open battle, losing 96 aircraft. All in all this battle was a failure and ended up hurting us more than it helped us because frankly, it didn't help at all.
